First was known as the University of Oklahoma established on December 19th 1890. The first classes were held on November 18, 1891. Comparatively, Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) held its first classes in December 1891, and The University of Oklahoma began its first classes in the fall of 1892.

UCO is a participant in intercollegiate athletics within the NCAA at the Division II level and is part of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The school joined the MIAA in 2012 before joining the MIAA, UCO was a member of the Lone Star Conference and was the most prestigious school within the conference. In 2010, the university was eligible for membership in the MIAA. On the 30th of July, 2010 the conference formally approved its application to join the conference starting in the academic year 2012-2013. The women’s and men’s teams are referred to as the Bronchos.
UCO currently plays baseball, both women’s and male’s basketball as well as track and field football, football, both golf for both women and men and softball, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and wrestling, as well as women’s rowing. The women’s rowing squad has had a great run in the last couple of years, having won back-to-back NCAA DII Rowing Championships (2018-2019).

The graduate degree is awarded in any field that is offered by the institution for the Graduate International Merit Global Scholarships.
To be eligible to be considered for The Graduate International Merit Global Scholarships the applicants must satisfy the following criteria:
Minimum 3.25 or higher in Bachelor’s degree GPA cumulative to be eligible to be considered for the Global Graduate Merit Scholarships.
